Palestinians turn to the UN rather than the ICC

A draft resolution setting out a Palestinian timetable for a peace deal with Israel has been brought to the UN Security Council.

The document calls for a deal in a year and for Israel to withdrawal form the occupied territories by the end of 2017.

But Israel’s UN ambassador Ron Prosor said that by pursuing this draft resolution, “once again, the Palestinians are shooting in all directions, missing the real target. Their habit of bypassing negotiations by taking unilateral action and blaming everyone but themselves will only move the region further away from stability,” Prosor said in a statement to AP.

·         Has this new proposal got any chance or will the US veto it (as usual)?

·         After flirting with signing up to the ICC for so long, can the world take this latest move seriously?

·         Why isn’t the route of going slowly, slowly, rather than putting pressure on Israel about war crimes via the ICC apparently still attractive to the Palestinians?

See here the discussion we’ve reflected in our Weekly Hubble on this issue.

And here the way that Palestine became an observer at the ICC’s annual meeting last week.
