So what is the International Criminal Court in The Hague actually doing? This story map gives the basics about the ICC and takes you on a tour of the situations that the Court is currently dealing with. It also gives background to the people who are on trial and those who have been convicted so far.
The story map gives information about the two men who have already been convicted: Thomas Lubanga Dyilo, who was found guilty of war crimes and is currently serving a 12-year sentence and Germain Katanga who is also serving a 12-year sentence for crimes against humanity and war crimes. It also features Jean-Pierre Bemba who is facing charges of crimes against humanity and war crimes, the ongoing trials of Bosco Ntaganda, Kenyan Deputy President William Ruto and journalist Joshua arap Sang, as well as the upcoming trials of former Ivorian president Laurent Gbagbo and Charles Blé Goudé, former LRA leader Dominic Ongwen and Ahmad al Faqi al Mahdi from Mali.
For more basic background information about the various cases, check out the long-form comic strips that our in-house cartoonist, Emanuele del Rosso, is producing:
The data for this story map was compiled by Ella West, and the map itself was produced by Knight Lab at Northwestern University in Chicago.
West earlier produced a story about diversifying the list of counsel at the ICC.
