The International Criminal Court’s announcement last Thursday that it was unsealing arrest warrants against two Kenyans sparked off fresh and at times heated debate on the social media fora of our sister site, The Hague Trials Kenya. The two men – lawyer Paul Gicheru and Phillip Kipkoech Bett – are accused of “corruptly influencing witnesses” in the closed case of President Uhuru Kenyatta and the ongoing case against Deputy President William Ruto and journalist Joshua arap Sang.

There are still deep divisions in Kenyan society as a result of the post-election violence in 2007-2008 that left over 1300 dead and displaced hundreds of thousands. Some followers of The Hague Trials Kenya see almost each and every ICC-related development through tribal glasses.
