As 2014 draws to a close, Justice Hub presents highlights of the best cartoons we featured from Cartoon Movement. 

ICC Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda has called on the international community to be more proactive in helping to restore stability and strengthen accountability for crimes committed in Libya that fall under the Rome Statute. “There is certainly room for all of us to do more. To be sure, we must not fail Libya, but Libya must also not fail itself,” concluded Ms. Bensouda.

The Syrian Kurdish city Kobani has been besieged by ISIS for more than four weeks. About 300,000 people have fled the city into Turkey. However, some people have stayed there, at great danger to themselves. ISIS has captured a strategic hill close by and is using it to launch rockets and heavy artillery on the city.

A justice mechanism to deal with the Syrian conflict has seemed low on the world’s agenda. This week brought news of US government-funding cuts for a widely praised NGO gathering Syrian war crimes evidence. The Russian and Chinese vetoes of a Syrian referral by the UN Security Council to the International Criminal Court make a trial in The Hague unlikely. And it is hard to focus on accountability when the ISIS horror films published on YouTube have all but upstaged the Assad regime’s atrocities.
