There’s nothing better than a well-thought-out and well-drawn cartoon to effectively deliver a message, especially when it comes to the topics Justice Hub deals with on a daily basis. This is why, as we reach the end of 2015, we have prepared a “best of the year”, consisting of six of the best-crafted works that were published on our website during the last 12 months. Enjoy!

Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir

1. Fadi Abou Hassan, from Norway, drew Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir walking on a blood-stained blade’s edge. His cartoon goes along with an article about Al-Bashir’s bold political behaviour.

Ivorian journalist who was forced into exile

2. Roland Polman, a renowned Ivorian cartoonist, translated the story of Amadou Tall – who was abducted and beaten by pro-Gbagbo soldiers during the post-election violence in Côte d’Ivoire – into a very effective black and white long-form cartoon.

3. “If it looks like a duck, goes quack quack like a duck, it must be a duck”, declared Stéphane Bourgeon, the defence counsel of Bosco Ntaganda. He was trying to explain how the defence team would counter the evidence laid out by the Office of the Prosecutor. The cartoon is by Kenyan cartoonist Alphonce Omondi.

ISIL at the ICC - still a long way to go?

4. A cartoon by Jehad Awrtani from Jordan. His work was selected to accompany a piece about whether IS might come under the ICC’s scrutiny.

Palestine joins the ICC

5. The Palestine-Israel relationship within and without the ICC is definitely a time bomb for Chief Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda. Dr. Meddy, from Tanzania worked on visualizing this issue.

Assembly of States Parties gives International Criminal Court far less than it wanted

6. After the 14th Assembly of the States Parties of the ICC, much has been said about the Court’s failure to get a substantial budget increase. This cartoon is by the Italian cartoonist Emanuele Del Rosso.
